The FEMM Approach
Your cycle is one of the most useful pieces of information your body gives you, and most of us were never taught how to read it. FEMM changes that. It's a knowledge-based approach to women's health that teaches you to understand your hormones, recognize what's normal for you, and make informed decisions about your health and fertility.
What Is FEMM?
FEMM stands for Fertility Education and Medical Management. It's a women's health program that teaches you to observe and chart your own hormonal biomarkers, so you can understand your cycle, identify ovulation, and share clear, useful information with your healthcare providers. FEMM is first and foremost an education program. It's built on the idea that when women understand their bodies, they can take an active, confident role in their own care.
Your Cycle Is a Vital Sign
We check blood pressure, heart rate, and temperature as signs of overall health. Your menstrual cycle, and ovulation in particular, tells a story about your health too. Cycle changes can reflect stress, hormonal shifts, and underlying health conditions, which is why understanding your pattern matters whether you're trying to avoid pregnancy, trying to conceive, or simply want to know what's normal for you.
What You Chart
FEMM keeps charting simple and low-tech. You'll learn to track:
Cervical mucus. Daily observations that reflect your hormonal activity and fertility
Bleeding. Your period and any spotting
LH testing. Optional ovulation test strips, used when they're helpful
There's no thermometer and no special equipment. The free FEMM app makes daily tracking easy and lets you share your chart with your provider.
What You'll Learn
[CONFIRM: session number and format] FEMM is typically taught in three one-on-one sessions:
Session 1: Your Hormones and How to Chart
How your hormones shape your cycle and your overall health, and how to begin charting.
Session 2: Recognizing Healthy Patterns and Red Flags
How to tell what a healthy cycle looks like, and how to recognize patterns that may need a closer look.
Session 3: Applying Your Chart to Your Goals
How to use your chart to avoid pregnancy, achieve pregnancy, or simply stay informed about your health.
You'll have ongoing support as you practice, so you're never figuring it out alone.

FEMM Education and FEMM Medical Management
FEMM has two parts, and it's worth being clear about the difference.
FEMM education is what I provide as a certified FEMM instructor. I teach you how to chart, how to understand your hormones and your cycle, and how to apply that knowledge. I don't diagnose conditions or prescribe treatment.
FEMM medical management is provided by trained medical providers who read cycle charts alongside a full clinical workup to evaluate and treat underlying hormonal and reproductive health concerns. If your chart suggests that a medical evaluation would be worthwhile, I'll tell you honestly and help you take the next step. [CONFIRM: add your referral process or named FEMM medical provider, if you have one.]
How FEMM Fits with Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy
As a pelvic health physical therapist, I see how closely cycle health and pelvic health are connected. Painful periods, pain with intercourse, pelvic pain, and urinary changes around perimenopause often travel together with cycle changes. FEMM gives us a clearer picture of your hormones and your cycle, and pelvic floor physical therapy addresses the muscles, tissues, and movement patterns. Many patients benefit from both, and you're welcome to start with whichever fits your needs right now.
What to Expect at Your First Session
We'll talk through your history, your goals, and any questions you have. You'll learn how your cycle works and how to start charting. There's no pressure, no judgment, and nothing to prepare except curiosity.
Frequently Asked Questions about FEMM
Do I need to be trying to get pregnant to learn FEMM? No. FEMM is for anyone who wants to understand her cycle, whether that's for fertility, health, or simply knowing your body better.
Is FEMM the same as the rhythm method or a period-tracking app? No. Calendar-based methods predict your cycle. FEMM teaches you to observe your own daily biomarkers, which reflect what your body is actually doing in the current cycle.
Do I have to be off hormonal birth control? You can learn FEMM no matter what you're using. Decisions about birth control are yours to make with your provider, and I'm happy to meet you wherever you are.
How long does it take to learn? Most people begin charting after the first session and feel confident within a few cycles, with support along the way.
Can my partner be involved? Yes, partners are welcome and often find it helpful.
Is FEMM a replacement for seeing a doctor? No. FEMM education complements your medical care. It helps you understand your body and bring better information to your provider.
